Echoes of Unity - Empowering Refugees to Build Stronger Communities in Uganda
As part of our Socio-Economic Development workstream, we are excited to introduce Echoes of Unity, a transformative initiative aimed at empowering refugees across Uganda to become active leaders in fostering social cohesion and driving positive change within their communities. Uganda hosts over 1.4 million refugees from various countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and South Sudan. As they seek a fresh start, many suffer from significant challenges, such as social isolation, limited access to education, economic hardships, cultural and ethnic tensions, health concerns, environmental challenges and barriers to civic participation. These challenges hinder their ability to build inclusive, unified communities. These challenges underline the urgent need for initiatives that empower refugees, foster cross-cultural collaboration, and build resilient communities. By addressing these issues, Echoes of Unity aims to create inclusive spaces for dialogue, skill development, and active participation in community-building efforts.
Our Solution
Echoes of Unity creates a collaborative platform for refugees to connect with experienced professionals across the world. Together, they will engage in a series of dynamic “Practitioners Labs,” where they can:
- Identify Local Needs: Gather insights through storytelling and dialogue to address pressing challenges related to social cohesion.
- Co-Create Solutions: Develop practical civic engagement tools like community dialogues and advocacy campaigns with guidance from other experts and partners.
- Build Shared Narratives: Initiate collaborative art projects that reflect the diverse experiences of refugees and enhance community spaces.
Having witnessed firsthand the resilience and creativity of refugees, small chunks Organisation are deeply motivated to support initiatives that empower these individuals. By facilitating their active participation in community-building efforts, we can help them reclaim their agency, foster relationships, and create a shared sense of belonging.
This refugee-led approach will:
- Strengthen Social Cohesion: Build trust, reduce isolation, and bridge divides within selected refugee communities in Uganda.
- Boost Civic Engagement: Equip refugees with vital leadership, advocacy, and community organizing skills.
- Foster Inclusive Communities: Ensure refugee voices drive local solutions, promoting equity and participation.
- Leverage Global Expertise: Connect local challenges with the diverse knowledge of the other partners from other institutions and organizations outside Uganda.

This funding will directly support: Facilitation, coordination, and local expertise, Participant logistics, materials, and art supplies, Hybrid event technology for global collaboration and Documentation and sharing of the project’s outcomes and learnings.
